Can we just take a moment to imagine (if she does come back relatively soon) Susan’s reaction to Clara and Danny being the Doctor’s companions please?
"So what do you do when you’re not traveling with him?"
"I teach at Coal Hill."
"…Did he kidnap you?"
how did I know you were going to be the one person who was actually gonna ask me a question
TESS I CAN’T DO THIS OKAY. I have, like, favourites from every era and so I’ll at least give you those, but then it gets complicated. and that’s even without saying it’s really goddamn hard to pick favourites because I actually adore all the companions a lot
One’s era’s favourites are Barbara, Vicki, and Dodo. darlings, all three! Barbara manages to be a badass and capable and in charge while also being able to need comfort and needing help on occasion, and she is like the golden shining light of my heart. Why didn’t I ever have Barbara as a history teacher. Vicki was always loveable but she’s actually grown on me since I’ve watched her — a vast majority of her serials are ones I unequivocally love, I really love her back and forth with Steven, and her relationship with the Doctor is beautiful and sad and lovely. And I love her backstory! And Dodo, lovely Dodo who didn’t get enough time or attention — I really like that she and the Doctor have that surrogate-granddaughter relationship, like Vicki before her, but I also love how unapologetically Dodo Dodo is. Like, she bounces straight into things, isn’t fazed by anything, and she’s so open to adventure! EU WAS NOT KIND TO HER AND I AM MAD.
Two’s are Ben/Polly (YOU REALLY CAN’T SEPARATE THEM) and Jamie. Ben and Polly are not inseparable in my mind because they’re bland, which is what some people accuse (FROWNS LOUDLY) but because they’re just so damn perfect for each other, not just romantically but in general. Ben’s a bit cocky, a bit unsure, cynical, and puts his feet firmly on the ground; Polly knows how to turn him down sweetly and grin while she’s doing it, she’s unapologetically girly and sixties and still kicks ass like a boss (defeating Cybermen with nail polish remover — cocktail Polly, anyone?), and she’s more open-minded and ready for adventure, and they were the perfect pair to go through the first regeneration. Jamie’s just Jamie. I mean, how can you not love him? He’s curious and sarcastic and strong and rash and bold and protective and loyal and caring and so moral it hurts, and it doesn’t hurt that he’s a young Frazer Hines (mmm).
Three’s are LOL ALL OF THEM I CAN’T PICK ONE /FALLS OVER Three’s era is just. AMAZING. Liz Shaw is level-headed and sharp-tongued and A MATCH FOR THE DOCTOR SCIENTIFICALLY and she pushes him and tries him and they’ve got such a push-pull relationship !!!!!! and Jo Grant has such a compelling character arc and ;w; I love her so much she’s genuinely so sweet and kind and wants to help everyone and subverts the rules to do what she can JO HONEY. <3 And I unashamedly love Sarah more with Three than I do with Four (/oops unpopular opinion??? although REALLY I LOVE SARAH EITHER WAY ALWAYS) because she starts off as such a go-getter — she pushes to get what she wants, her ethics are so important to her and she knows who she is and still goes along with the Doctor because in the end they’re such a good match for each other, and Three and Sarah really played off each other so well.
Four? LEELA. Like, okay, Romanas I/II also, but I mean everyone knows how wonderful and prickly and intelligent and HBIC Romana is already, and my favourite from Four’s era is thus unequivocally Leela. She’s violent and yet so caring and gentle when she feels she needs to be and she’s also super protective and yet also dismissive sometimes of things that she doesn’t find important which is SUCH A GOOD CHARACTER FLAW and like. Leela. god I love Leela.
In the same vein, with Five it’s TEGAN. Tegan all day, every day, Tegan. She’s great in teams and her personality would make you think she wouldn’t be good to play off other characters but she is and it’s so interesting to watch how she interacts with Four, then Five — with Nyssa, compared to Adric, and both of them compared with Turlough. Her interactions are realistic but entirely too entertaining to watch and she’s smarter than people give her credit for and such a good friend and so caring and human ekfjnskdf TEGAN. I love everything about her.
Six; I have to say both Peri and Mel because both of them had so much potential and they were both criminally underused and I can’t pick a favourite. They all get better in Big Finish and there’s also Frobisher (!!! WHO I KNOW I’LL LOVE BUT CAN’T PICK YET) and Evelyn and stuff to pick from (also Charley teehee) but I can’t pick from them, I don’t know them yet. But Peri’s sarcasm and inner courage are so interesting to watch and she was robbed of a fantastic end that she should have had, and Mel is so brilliant despite being paralyzed by fear sometimes and so lively and I can’t wait to see how she actually first meets the Doctor.
Seven’s Ace. You literally will never be able to get another answer out of me no matter how much I will eventually love Hex and Raine and stuff from audios, or how much I loved Ray (should have been companion!!!!), Ace. I’ve loved her since my first serial with her and she’s easily in my top companions over all, because she’s the one I fell in love with fastest. Tough but still so hurt inside and she still fights it and she’s got a wicked sense of humour and she’s so so street-smart and school smart (HELLO, SHE MAKES HER OWN NITRO) and so caring and SURROUNDED BY TERRIBLE THINGS MORE PEOPLE NEED TO LOVE ACE AND NOT DIE
Eight (/sobs loudly) I don’t know who to chooooseeee. I loved Grace and her convictions and her stubbornness and Charley’s basically pure perfection in all her contradictions and her bright enthusiasm and love and C’rizz. SO FASCINATING IN ALL HIS DIMENSIONS and Lucie being Lucie and hiding all those emotions beneath her hard words (SARCASMO!!! WOMAN OF SARCASM!!!) and I haven’t even met Tamsin or Molly yet fkesljkdf or like half of his EDA/comic companions like. ANJI KAPOOR MY SOUL FOR ANJI SHE’S SO SNARKY AND REALISTICALLY FISH-OUT-OF-WATER AT FIRST and FITZ like how have I not yet talked about Fitz because he’s hilarious and so complex and !!! god Fitz basically Eight has too many companions and I love them all
Nine — is this even a question, duh. Shop girl who’s just so bored finally realizing that she can have adventures too, and she just grows and becomes so much more competent and her compassion for literally everyone makes my heart expand and she’s just so selfish and yet can be so selfless and her family relationships and background just add so much more understanding and make me love her that much more.
Ten is both Martha and Donna, I can’t choose, don’t make me choose. Martha’s arc is just gorgeous, and I’m so happy that we had an arc about someone finding their own place in the real world and learning to put themselves first which is !!!! WOW INCREDIBLE WE NEVER GET NARRATIVES LIKE THAT. And she’s such a match for the Doctor and is often better than him and she’s also so so caring to everyone around her and she’s got the patience of a saint, ;w; MARTHA JONES MY STAR. And Donna Noble was the first companion I immediately no questions asked fell in love with before Ace took her crown — there’s so much reserved emotion there and hidden depths that are only just hidden under that veil that she tries so hard to keep up and her self-esteem issues are so real just. UGH, good god. Donna is so great. <3
Eleven’s Amy, fire-cracking redhead and so wrought with her own deliberation over whether or not to grow up, I just wish the storyline hadn’t abused her and thrown her under a bus with regards to her mystical pregnancy and forced infertility. The Amy that we were introduced to was strong but unsure and I love her determination, and her dedication to what’s right. It was amazing.
SO TOO BAD YOU GOT ALL MY FAVOURITES I’M SORRY I CAN’T SHUT UP
I don’t even watch Star Trek but that is the most graceful bitchslap I have ever seen.
this is amazing
